Just to give people an idea of what grad school is like here:
-My first assignment for analysis was 6 pages of LaTeX. Several of the problems were difficult, although nothing outrageous.
-I am currently working on my first assignment for algebra, which is due tomorrow morning at 11. It is currently 18 pages long (written) and I have several questions left to do. I expect to be working on it under 3 or 4 in the morning. I may go home to sleep afterwards, if I think that is worthwhile.
-600 topology was too difficult for me, so I dropped down to the 500 topology. The 600 topology assignment ran over 20 pages in length for most of my friends who did it, and most of them did not finish it completely. The 500 assignment was 11 questions from Munkres of varying difficulty levels, and was about 5 or 6 pages of LaTeX. In addition, grad students in 500 get an extra assignment each week. This week's assignment deals with the Zariski topology from algebraic geometry, which is not covered in class or in the textbook.
-I already have two more assignments due next week, with another expected to be handed out tomorrow.
-This is the first two weeks of class. I also have to do all the prep for my precalculus classes, and of course teach them.
This is not meant to discourage anyone from doing graduate work. In fact, I encourage people to write GREs and join me down here. It's a lot of work but a lot of fun too. Just letting you know what I'm up against. Hope everyone is having a slightly easier semester with less all-nighters.
